Mental Health Support

HealthCare NZ's mental health and addiction services support people with mental health and addiction problems to live independent and successful lives in their community.

Our services are designed to support each person's wellbeing, journey to recovery, personal ambitions and goals.

We provide a wide range of services from specialist support for children, adolescents, adults and older people, to planned respite support, medication monitoring, acute needs services and independent living assistance.

We support people to:

  • develop stronger life management skills
  • find practical solutions to life's challenges
  • maintain their medication regime
  • rebuild their resilience
  • sustain affordable accommodation
  • identify their strengths
  • improve their confidence and self-esteem
  • become more involed in the community
  • works towards their goals
  • build stronger social networks and connections.

Our depth of expertise means that we are able to tailor our services to respond to the needs of the person involved and their family/whānau, where appropriate.

Accessing the service

The mental health service is accessed through a Community Mental Health Team. They will make an assessment based on these criteria:

  • That the person's support needs meet the criteria published by the Ministry of Health.
  • That the person’s lifestyle has been disrupted over the last six months or longer as a result of their mental illness.
  • They may have had two or more unplanned accommodation moves.
  • They may be unable to sustain paid employment.
  • Their ability to care for themselves may have deteriorated.
  • Their relationship with family/whānau and/or their social network may have deteriorated.
