He toi kupu. He mana Tangata. Ten principles for all.
NZCare's Ten Principles demonstrate how we translate our vision into
practice and apply to our relationships with people with disabilities,
their family/whānau and advocates, and with staff.
- Communicate with all people with respect
- Include people in conversations. Communicate with them, not about them
- Use positive interactions and communication; use only positive language
- Explain things in ways people understand and observe how the information is received
- Encourage people to think by asking questions or suggestion options
- Support and encourage individuals to do as much as possible for themselves, rather than doing it for them
- Include people in making decisions, provide choices when necessary
- Respect differences and an individual’s desires, culture, spirituality, needs and values
- Seriously consider a person's feelings and concerns, remember other peoples' feelings are important
- If involved in a disagreement, listen to each other's point of view; if upset, don't allow it to affect your behaviour.
